ABOUT MEOceanographerDr. Shuting Liu is a marine scientist specialized in organic geochemistry and microbial oceanography. Dr. Liu is currently a faculty in the Department of Environmental & Sustainability Sciences at Kean University. Dr. Liu's lab focuses on marine organic matter quantification and characterization, interactions between marine organic matter and microbes, and water quality assessment. Connecting organic geochemical processes with microbial ecology is essential to understand mechanisms controlling carbon and nitrogen cycles. Liu lab combines field work and lab analysis in research and utilizes a variety of instrumentation analysis. Dr. Liu has experience working with undergraduates, graduate students and high-school students.

ResearchRecent ProjectsUrban development leads to point and non-point source pollutions to coastal waters. With excessive nutrient loading to the aquatic environments, algal bloom events in New Jersey waters have been occurring frequently and documented in the past decades, which further degrade the water quality. Algae release fresh dissolved organic matter into the environment, which change water chemistry and bacterial communities. We target to assess water quality, algae-bacteria interactions, and organic matter cycling in the New Jersey coastal waters.

Teaching
Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is to inspire and fulfill students' curiosity as learning is based on curiosity. I am striving to develop students’ critical thinking abilities, promote their desire to discover new things and raise questions that are not answered before.
